Haberdashers’ Adams

Boys aged 11 to 18 & Co-Ed sixth form

Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School is one of the UK’s leading academic state schools, helping pupils achieve places at some of the best universities.  Adams’ was founded in 1656 when local businessman, William Adams, approached Oliver Cromwell, the ruler of England, about founding a school for boys in his home town of Newport in Shropshire.

In addition to 800 day pupils, the school is also home to approximately 100 boarders who live in two boarding houses.  Junior boarders, aged from 11 to 15, live at Longford Hall, an 18th century Georgian mansion set in over 100 acres of grounds.  Senior boarders, aged from 16-18, live in a series of traditional townhouses fronting Newport’s High Street and within the main school grounds.   In addition, a Chinese guardian fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin is available.

All of our boarding staff are professionals with many years of experience in caring for children. The Senior and Junior Boarding Housemasters oversee each house alongside a team of tutors and matrons.  The happiness of the students is our primary concern and all members of staff work constantly to make sure pupils feel relaxed and happy at school.  We strongly believe that a happy child will succeed and as such we place a strong emphasis on ensuring the boarders feel that the boarding houses are their home from home.

As well as an extensive range of extra-curricular activities organised during the week, we also provide a wide range of cultural and sporting activities for boarders at weekends.  These include trips to local heritage sites such as Ironbridge Gorge and the historic town of Shrewsbury, as well as activities such as camping trips to the seaside, go-karting, paint-balling and bowling.

Pupils at Adams’ achieve outstanding academic results.  In recent years, our A-level results have been extremely strong, enabling pupils to go to leading universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, University College London, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Warwick, all of which have worldwide reputations for research and academic excellence.
